About the course

Our comprehensive three-year GP Training programme is closely mapped to the Royal College of General Practitioners curriculum.

Trainees at West Suffolk undertake eighteen months of full time employment in general practice complemented by a further eighteen months of in-hospital training posts in the West Suffolk Hospital.

In the first year of the scheme, half of our trainees will start with a general practice placement whilst the other half do a six-month post in either Palliative Medicine, A&E, Medicine or Paediatrics. These two groups then swap over for the second half of the year.

During the second year, all trainees undertake a total of three hospital posts of four months’ duration each.  The posts involved will be a selection of Medicine, A&E, O&G, Paediatrics, Ophthalmology, ENT, Trauma and Orthopaedics and Psychiatry.

The final year is spent in general practice, at a different practice from the first year.  We try to arrange for trainees to experience both town and country practice environments.
