Hospital experience

The hospital component of the training programme is based at the West Suffolk Hospital on the outskirts of Bury St. Edmunds in the west of Suffolk.

Trainees undertake six months of hospital work in their first year, and then three different hospital posts in their second year of four months’ duration each.

This ensures a broad exposure to the main areas of medicine and provides scope for trainees to develop specialist interests once training is complete.

Learning Outcomes for Hospital Posts

We set clear and defined learning objectives for each hospital post, designed to reflect what trainees should be able to achieve in their post to support the curriculum set by the Royal College of General Practitioners.

Taster placements in Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology

We have recognised that trainees who do not have rotations with Obstetrics & Gynaecology (O&G) or Paediatrics benefit from learning more about these areas. All of our trainees who have rotations without Paediatrics or O&G are offered 2 week placements in these specialities to help give them the additional experience they need.
